The Yap Museum Board of
Directors, in a recent meeting, unanimously voted to
re-examine the scope and direction of the Yap State
museum project efforts. It was decided to develop the
concept of a Yap State Living History Museum.

The new plan puts a greater emphasis
on traditional skill trainings along with a building
scheme to utilize traditional construction. Consequently,
the museum will allow all the observers to experience
the unique culture of Yap State. The new plan will assure
the preservation of traditional skills and will significantly
reduce the initial building costs and annual operating
budget. The Living History Museum will be in a park-like
setting and will encompass other efforts such as the
Traditional Navigation Society, and other preservation
activities. The museum site will be utilized by the first
annual Yap Canoe Festival October 23-25, 2009, and any
permanent traditional structures constructed for that
event would remain as a part of the Living History Museum.
