Yap Men re-enact the traditional transportation and placement of ‘Rai’ (stone money) at Mangyol Cultural Site’s stone money bank, Makiy Village, Gagil, during the 4th Micronesia EXPO 2025 currently underway on Yap from July 21 -25.
Rai stones represent wealth, status, and history within the Yapese community and are still used for important transactions like marriage dowries, land purchases, and settling disputes.
When ownership changes, especially for significant stones, a ceremony is often held to publicly acknowledge the transfer. The entire Yapese community participates in remembering and acknowledging these transfers, ensuring that everyone knows who owns which stone.
